La dea della Verità
E' stata raffigurata come una donna che indossa un'alta piuma di struzzo sulla testa o una piuma di struzzo
Figlia di RA, moglie di Thot, Maat, era la divinità che rappresentava gli ideali della Legge, l'ordine e la verità.
La parola Maat significa 'Ciò che è giusto' e suggerisce che tutto è vero, ordinato o bilanciato.
E' una divinità molto antica perchè la troviamo sulla barca di Ra quando questi risalì dalle acqua degli abissi di NU il primo giorno. Insieme a Thot guida il percorso giornaliero del dio sole Ra.
Maat ha un ruolo importante nel ''Libro dei Morti''poichè la ''Stanza di Maat'' era il luogo dove l'anima della persona morta veniva giudicata. Il giudizio veniva espresso dopo aver comparato il peso del cuore (coscienza) del morto con la piuma di Maat. Se il peso bilanciava il deceduto era giudicato meritevole di incontrare Osiride nell' al di là. Se il cuore del deceduto era più pesante della piuma di Maat egli sarebbe stato divorato da Ammut, ''Il Dovoratore'', raffigurato come un demone femminile dal corpo formato da n insieme di parti di leone,ippopotamo e coccodrillo..
Questa era una prospettiva terrificante per gli Antichi Egizi. Significava la fine dell'esistenza.
Durante l'Antico Regno il compito primario del faraone era di mantenere Maat nella società.
Conosciuto come il Signore di Maat, egli decretava con la bocca la Maat nel suo cuore. Questa era una responsabilità estremamente importante perchè l'ordine naturale e l'armonia cosmica sarebbero stati disturbati se qualcuno avesse violato Maat ed il faraone avesse fallito nel ristabilire l'ordine assicurandosi che giustizia fosse fatta, o se il faraone avesse violato Maat con la sua propria condotta.

Maat plays an important role in the 'Book of the Dead' because 'The Hall of Maat' was the place where the judgement of the dead was performed. This was done by weighing one's heart (conscience) against the feather of Maat. If a balance was struck the deceased was deemed to be worthy of meeting Osiris in the after life. If the heart of the deceased was found to be heavier then the feather of Maat it would be devoured by Ammut, 'The Devourer' depicted as a female demon with a body part lion, hippopotamus, and crocodile.. This was a terrifying prospect for the ancient Egyptians. It meant the end of existence.
During the Old Kingdom, the pharaoh’s primary role was to maintain Maat in society. Known as the Lord of Maat, he was said to decree with his mouth the Maat in his heart. This was an extremely important responsibility because the natural order and cosmic harmony would be disturbed, if someone violated Maat and pharaoh failed to restore it by making sure that justice was done, or if pharaoh violated Maat by his own conduct.
