The time to form a scribe was very long: only the most gifted students, those who learned the intricate art of hieroglyphic monuments, managed to get to court. The scribe, keeping the secret of his profession, handed down his knowledge from generation to generation. Thoth , the god of writing and wisdom, as well as a magician and messenger of the gods, was the Scribes protector.

The scribes were employed to perform administrative tasks and the copying of religious texts. They faced an internship in the temples of four years, during which they were trained with the utmost severity, resorting sometimes to corporal punishment. The scribe could also specialize in religious studies to become a priest, or by way of medicine. Scribes were represented in bas-relief and there are many statues of them found in the tombs of officials. These statues are easily recognizable by the sitting position with legs crossed and head tilted forward as depicted in the statue called "Scribe red."
