    Ladybug Legend Part Two

    null

Much of our culture is due not only to what we learn from books but also from all those elements that are sent to us, even if we don't realize it, through traditions or beliefs that when we recall them, our mind makes us think of our grandparents or some uncle who used to tell, around a hearth, one of those stories that were the envy of the best scripts of our day.

And it is from our roots that we gain certainty and beliefs ... so much to give credit to some beliefs that probably would lose their value if viewed with rational or scientific eye.

But what are the elements that have led it to be regarded as the universal giver of luck?

An ancient legend tells that the ladybug was the emblem of the ancient Italic goddess Lucina (Juno in Roman era), goddess of light and, as extension, of labor and delivery, but also a goddess of love and beauty (there are a bit discordant stories about it).

The red color of the little animal is also well-wishing from immemorial time, and it is the symbol of the victory over enemies, and diseases ( in fact, ancient physicians used to prescribe red robes to people with rheumatism).
In fact, the name, in ancient greek is Kokkinos, or scarlet, while the Italian name comes from the Latin name "Coccinella".

Even the ladybugs have different races. There are, in fact, "liveries" who present from 4 to 10 points and can be red / orange / yellow and black with yellow spots. The most common have 7 points and are red or orange.

If we add that the symbolism associated with the number seven as the number of luck, we can understand why the collective imagination of a ladybug with seven dots unleash such benevolence.

In fact, nowadays it is said that the number of black dots on the back of the ladybug indicate the number of months in which you will be kissed by the goddess of fortune, and that money will come soon. Luck is greater if the insect alights the time it takes to count to 22.

Obviously it is a belief, that however makes smile. Consider that in the legends and folk traditions, especially in southern Italy, the ladybug is linked to the Lady or even the Lord (also called Lady beetle, hen of the Lord).

In other countries, the ladybug has just different names; in the Middle Ages German and English peasants, for example, believed that the ladybug was a gift of the Holy Mary against the plague of aphids. So they called it "beetle of Mary." In France it is called the "little animal of the Lord."

If you want to give a reason for its practical utility, this beetle is a great help.

Most of the ladybugs are carnivorous, formidable predatory , both in the adult stage that especially in the juvenile stage, for a number of crop pests with a specific specialization for what concerns the choice of prey.

There are species that live eating exclusively aphids, other eat only insects , others only to mites.
Not all ladybugs, however, are carnivorous: there are also 'vegetarian' species that eat mushrooms or plant tissue. For this reason, they are applied in various biological control methods.

And here is the story of our pet that makes us smile and hope when it lies on us . At this point, since I have a ladygugs invasion in the balcony, I'll sit there hoping that more than one of them land on me and remain over 22 seconds!

    The Ladybug Mascot

Once upon a time a Chinese man had a daughter who was getting married. This man, named Chao, did not know what to give to the bride and groom and so he went into the woods of Kinlein Shan to meditate.

There he saw an Avadavat with a paw stuck in a fence. The animal prayed Chao to release him. He did so, and the Avadavat gave him the gift of talking to animals.

On the way back the man met a fierce Bengal tiger with whom communicated and to whom also told about the marriage gift . The wise tiger suggested the man to go to the mountain with three peaks where he would find a blue ladybug.

You have to know that in those days ladybugs did not have the funny black dots and that beautiful red color they have now, and that makes them so much funny.

Chao went to the mountain with three peaks and found the ladybug who told him to pick her up and take her to her daughter. It would bring her luck forever. The Chinese picked up the sweet and generous ladybug who sacrificed for him and carried it downstream.

His daughter, Mippeny, who was arrogant and greedy, expected a lot full of diamonds or other things equally important; when she saw the ladybug, she grimaced with disdain, and sent out the door his father. The ladybug very sensitive, as a result of this humiliation died. Chao wept long and his tears fell on the blue ladybug who returned to life, with those black spots that has even now.

The man watched in disbelief and amazement at this miracle and he did not stay longer in his skin for happiness. He brought the animal from where it came and stood there, too.

The next day, Chao, woke up under a blanket of dew, finally saw the life of the undergrowth and was able to appreciate it, so much so that he turned into a blue ladybug and remained there throughout his short and happy life.
