There are mysteries in the history of Cagliari, which seem intended to always intrigue the popular imagination.
One of them is the ghost of the Doves Cave (Grotta dei Colombi).
The cave is situated at the base of the Sant'Elia hill , near the inlet of Cala Fighera. Accessible only by boat, it was the poachers preferred place of hunting in the area, because it is the hideout of pigeons and doves that, even today, nest within in large quantities.
Then in the first half of the nineteenth century something happened , and the cave suddenly became a place to avoid.

It all began a few years earlier, between 1794 and 1795. A man named Dais was found guilty of having organized the popular unrest that led to the killing of two knights,Gerolamo Pitzolo Gavino Palliaccio, in the public eye.
Revenge was tremendous. The Dais was tortured by his enemies, and still alive, abandoned at the entrance of the Doves Cave where he painfully die . But his soul can not rest in peace, as all those who die a violent death. And then he becomes a ghost, hidden in the darkness of the cave, where it still spreads its mournful lament scaring the unwary visitors.
