    Edward The Confessor's Sapphire

St. Edward's Sapphire is a precious stone which is part of the Crown Jewels.

According to legend the stone was named after Edward the Confessor set it in its real ring , in 1042 for the his coronation. The gem then survived the centuries and especially the attempt of destruction and recovery of valuable materials of the crown jewels that Oliver Cromwell wanted to operate . The sapphire was cut in its present form under Charles II after the the Stuarts restoration. Finally, during Queen Victoria Reign, the stone was laid in the summit cross of the Imperial State Crown.

    St. John Legend

According to legend, King Edward had great respect for St. John the Evangelist and was known for his charity to the poor. One day Edward was on his way to Westminster Abbey when he was joined by a beggar and soon the good king looked in his bag of money to donate to the poor. However, finding the empty bag, the monarch without hesitation took off the precious ring from his finger and gave it to the man who, thanked and departed from him.

Many years later, Edward was visited by pilgrims from the Holy Land who argued that St. John the Evangelist had appeared and that told them that years before, while he was disguised beggar, he received the ring by the hands of the king. The saint gave them the order to return the ring to the king, since his conduct was sufficiently proven. They also said that St. John the Evangelist would have visited Edward in paradise six months later and exactly six months after this conversation with the two pilgrims, Edward died.
