The Legend of the May Flower Tree

Every typical warm night of the mounth of May, a Mayan native spent his time to observe and contemplate the stars of the Southern Cross.

He was sad and sorrowful because he had no children and prayed the gods to give him a beautiful daughter as the stars of heaven he loved so much.

His prayers were answered, and his wife gave birth to a beautiful white girl just as he had always dreamed of.

The girl grows, beautiful but melancholic and sad. She spent a long time looking at the stars.

When she was a teenager melancholy and sadness worsened and, despite the efforts, the healers of the region were not able to find a cure for her unknown disease.

n May, just when the Southern Cross was at the height of its glory the sad girl died.

The following night her father dreamed that his beloved daughter was flying among the stars which she belonged. The gods had heard his prayers and they answered by sending him a star in human form, that after having made him happy was back in heaven.

The following year, when the Southern Cross appeared in the sky, a tree born at the foot of the girl's tomb flourished.

In Mayan language the tree is called Sak Nicté (May Flower) because it blooms in the month of the sad girl death anniversary.

The legend of the May Flower or Nicté is part of the book " Mayan and Yucatan Legends" written by Clemente Lopez Trujillo
