The History of Villa Epecuén - Argentina

Villa Epecuén was founded January 21, 1887 and its name comes from the words in the Mapuche language "Epe" which means "almost" and "limit" which means "border".
In the early years of the nineteenth century the Lake Epecuén began acquiring notoriety thanks to the curative properties of its waters.

In the '20s grand hotels, beach resorts and restaurants were built and brought luxury and convenience for residents and tourists.
Between the '50s and' 70s resort growth and success consolidated.

In the early 70s the lake level began to decline due to natural causes and people, and investors began to worry about the increasing scarcity of water and put in place an ambitious project of sewage that was intended to import water from a another basin and thus meet the needs of the city, allowing it to regain its glory.

Subsequently and due to natural causes, the lake water level began to rise again and added to the water provided by the channel, and it was necessary to build a containment barrier.

On November 10, 1985 due to a "Sudestada" (atmospheric phenomenon consisting of periodic strong winds coming from the southeast, which provoked a sort of storm ) embankments could not contain the lake water and in two weeks the city was inundated with 2 meters of water.

In 1993, water reached its peak, and in some areas reached 10 meters

After 25 years water began to recede and the remains of the city reappeared; salt, has made possible the preservation of trees that are white as well as the ruins of the buildings.
